Stepping up my blogging game

5 ways I'm stepping up my blogging game

Recently I've been thinking about my blog a lot - working 30 hours a week alongside being a single parent means that it often gets neglected. Being a part of the blogosphere is something I really enjoy and I want to be proud of the content I'm putting out so here's 5 ways I'm stepping up my blog ...

1. Changing my blog name

When I first started blogging I thought that I'd exclusively blog about make up. I love reading beauty blogs and watch more beauty related YouTube than I care to admit to so it seemed the obvious route to take. I named my blog 'Makeup with JayXo' and uploaded my first post all about how I buy Kylie Cosmetics (which can be read here).

The more I got in to blogging, the more I realised I wanted to write about whatever I felt passionate about at the time. So here we are, I've changed my name to Jayxo Blogs and expanded the subjects I write about.

2. Buying my domain

This is something that I had been thinking about doing for a while now for a few reasons - it gives your blog a more professional look and I wanted to start building on my Domain Authority.

When I changed my blog name I decided it was the perfect time to take the plunge. I brought a 2 year domain plus privacy from GoDaddy for just over £20. Turns out that was the easy part. I'm not exactly what you'd call tech savvy, honestly I think my IT skills match that of my 72 year old Grandad. It took me well over an hour to change my blog name and redirect traffic to my new domain and that was with a VERY detailed set of instructions. I've had it set up for well over a week now and only today did I realise that none of my drop down menus were working as they still had my old URL linked to them.

3. Getting a new blog header

Now that I had my new blog name and my own domain I decided it was time to give my blog a bit of a makeover. I still absolutely love my Pipdig blog theme so decided to just have a new header and signature made. There are so many talented people on Twitter that make custom headers (my old was made by Jemma at DorkfaceBlog).

I had been eyeing up Emmy's (from Emmy Writes About) work for a while so decided to ask her if she could make mine. I honestly had no idea what I really wanted other than vague colour selections. Emmy made up around 8 different first drafts for me, from there I told her which bits I liked and she made more drafts. I honestly couldn't decide which one to choose when she sent over the final lot so ended up buying 2 of them so I can switch them up depending on my mood. I honestly couldn't recommend Emmy more, she listened to exactly what I was saying and brought my ideas to life.

More examples of Emmy's talented creations and information on the services she offers can be found here.

4. Reading blog posts about blogging

Where better to learn about blogging than other bloggers? I've read so many great posts on blogging lately and have learnt so much. Some of my favourits

5. Immersing my self into the community

Being a new blogger is hard, the blogging community can be an intimidating place BUT I have met some of the most wonderful, supportive people through it. I've found the best place to meet like minded people is through blogger chats - my favourites are the Bloggers Tribe chat and the GRL POWR chats, they're also my favourite retweet accounts alongside PLBChats. The more often I join in these chats the more great people I meet and they really boost blog and social media engagement too.

Well there you have it, that's the 5 ways I'm stepping up my blogging game. Is there anything that you would do differently?

    1. No, thank you for writing it. I love the way you use a spreadsheet to track your posts. You're literally one of the reasons I brought my domain too. I remembered you saying on my poll that building your DA score is really useful - although its currently 1 haha xx

  4. I feel like changing the blog name and buying the domain are to major steps to feeling like you're a pro blogger lol! I remember how long it took me to work out that domain thing. In fact, I still have to redirect all the comments on my older posts as it took me agessss to work that out - and I changed my domain in January lol! x

  7. Great post- I think having your own domain definitely makes things look more professional, but when it comes to growing your following, interaction is key.

  8. Congrats on buying your domain! I found that between .wordpress.com or .blogspot.com blogs and your own website you get WAAAY more traffic with your own purchased site. I agree it's one of the best ways to up your game if you have the spare pennies.
